What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a time-tested, non-surgical procedure used to treat internal hemorrhoids, especially Grade 1 and Grade 2. This procedure injects a special medicated solution (called a sclerosant) into the swollen hemorrhoid. This causes the vein to shrink, dry, and get fixed back in place, without cutting or stitching. How Does It Work?

The injected solution creates a mild reaction inside the hemorrhoid, which leads to:
• Reduced blood supply to the hemorrhoid
• Shrinking of the swollen vein
• Scarring (fibrosis) that fixes it back in its normal position

Who is Sclerotherapy For?

Best suited for:
• Grade 1 and 2 internal hemorrhoids
• Patients who are not fit for surgery
• Elderly patients or those looking for quick relief
A newer method called Foam Sclerotherapy uses air mixed with the medicine to create foam. This spreads better and requires a smaller quantity of the drug.

What to Expect During the Procedure

• You will lie on your left side.
• A small amount of solution (about 0.5 ml) is injected into each hemorrhoid.
• It takes just a few minutes.
• You can go home the same day.
If done properly, you will not feel pain during the procedure.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

• Usually 1–3 sessions, spaced 3 weeks apart
• If hemorrhoids don’t improve after 3 attempts, surgery may be considered

Important Precautions

• The injection must be placed above the dentate line to avoid pain
• The doctor will always withdraw the syringe slightly before injecting to avoid injecting into a blood vessel
• The injection must go into the submucosal layer, not into the hemorrhoid’s core or surrounding muscle.
